Interceptor is the go-to heartworm preventive for many Collie parents. Additionally, it can also be given to cats and even pregnant or nursing animals. It targets not only heartworms, but also hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. Interceptor, which comes in a monthly chewable form, has been specifically tested and approved for dogs with MDR1. Regardless of the heartworm product you choose, as the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology says, “treatment of MDR1 mutant dogs with macrocyclic lactones in general requires particular caution.” It really boils down to weighing the benefits of medications against the risks from internal parasites. Another danger often lies in a treated dog being exposed to additional environmental pesticides, which can lead to an accidental overdose. If an MDR1-affected dog were to be treated for mange, that would involve higher dosages and could cause adverse reactions. However, not all ML’s are created equal, and some are safer than others. These four ML compounds (ivermectin, moxidectin, selamectin, and milbemycin oxide) have been officially approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) and tested safe for MDR1 dogs when administered at the recommended preventative dosage. You should still keep an eye on your pet when introducing new organic products.īear with me for a little pharmaceutical science, which I promise is important and will make sense in the end! It’s simpler to identify medicines by their components, since many of them are essentially the same thing marketed under different brand names.Īll the available heartworm medications on the market are a variation of what is known clinically as a ML (macrocyclic lactone) compound. But remember, dogs can also be sensitive to essential oils – just like my friend who is allergic to lavender – so “natural” doesn’t automatically mean “best” for your dog either. ![]() This article from Your Dog Advisor gives more natural prevention options and even tells you how to mix your own parasite preventives using essential oils and water. In regard to natural products, I’ve used some organic topicals, which I’ll list later, that are somewhat effective as repellents but unfortunately I do not know of any natural pest control products that actually work as well as chemical-based ones. Any dog can have a sensitivity to a certain substance and should always be monitored for reactions after a new product has been administered. However, I have to state the disclaimer that even parasite protection products officially labeled safe from an MDR1 standpoint should really be designated “safe- ish.” Most of these products are chemical compounds, and as such have more potential to cause a reaction than just, well, water. (Some of the links lead to peer-reviewed scientific articles, so have fun with those if you want the bare, dusty facts.) If you’re hoping for a quick, easy skim and just want to know which pest protections are considered safe, I’ll list those first under each heading, followed by the “use with caution” category, and finally the “not safe” options.įor those of you who want proof or a more in-depth explanation of why I’ve given each medicine its label, feel free to read the commentary under each product and even follow the embedded links for further reading. ![]() I have two Rough Collies who are MDR1 carriers and an Aussie mix, so I have a vested interest in everything I’ve researched. I’ll list all the options I looked into (including several I’ve personally tried), along with whether they’re considered safe to use, use with caution, or a complete no-no. (Basically, I did the boring work to bring you the helpful information.) So here’s the culmination of my research: information gathered from laboratory case studies, veterinarians, and Collie owners, breeders, and exhibitors. The lack of accessible information on the topic of safe parasite protection left me so frustrated that I decided to write my own article. ![]() ![]() ![]() Positioning studio monitors often takes trial and error. Prepare To Invest Time - Possibly Extra Money The thing to note is that it is still very important to as good as possible before reaching for software aids such as speaker calibration. There are also some very clever software solutions available that have been around for a few years that adapt and improve the characteristics of studio monitors by use of EQ and other tech and we’ll cover those later in the article. The goal here is to get the most from studio monitors using common sense along with a handful of tools. Without the space and budget for very bulky bass trapping, the bottom-end response is likely to be less than ideal but there is a lot that can be done to improve matters even if you can’t afford an acoustician and a truckful of Rockwool and timber. If your gear is in a typical domestic space you’re unlikely to get a truly flat frequency response from your monitors using positioning techniques and limited acoustic treatment as issues created by standing waves and room modes are more challenging to correct in smaller rooms. So what can people working in home studios do in order to get better sounding monitors? Reset Your Expectations the reality is that hat those approaches aren’t practical for a lot of recording artists working in small home studios. Getting the best response from studio monitors requires a room specifically designed and built to have optimal acoustics… but that is expensive and difficult to achieve without skilled design. The properties/dimensions of the room the monitors are in. In the real world, studio monitors struggle to achieve anything like that because of a couple of factors: Monitors are designed to produce a flat frequency response, typically from 20Hz to 20kHz (the range of human hearing) in an ideal room. Monitor Specs Only Tell Half The Storyįrequency response graphs feature heavily in studio monitor marketing but they don't tell the whole story. It has to be said that a different arrangement of desk-mounted stands means he now has the better monitors in the right place but the principle still holds. ![]() In his test of the Yoyo Sit-Stand Desk, Julian substituted his usual monitors for his old Genelecs because he prioritised monitors, which were in the correct place - in this case, mounted to the desk so they stayed in the optimum position both in the sitting and standing positions, over a better pair of monitors, which were in the wrong position at least half the time. ![]() ![]() However, there is something else that can help get the sound of your monitors to your ears - the placement of your monitors. Ask almost any working mix engineer what the number one purchase that would improve your mix room is and you’ll probably get the same answer - Acoustic treatment. Monitors interact with the room in which they are placed and the sound that hits your ears is indivisibly combined with the influence of the room. You can’t just buy a pair of quality monitors and get what you paid for. With a pair of headphones, you put them on and you get optimal performance - simple! With monitors, things are more involved and this is bad news for anyone looking for quick answers. It’s an unavoidable truth that monitoring through loudspeakers gets complicated. ![]() ![]() If you want to better understand the science of how markets behave under stress - and why extreme events happen far more often than one might expect, and why “fat tail” phenomena appear to be everywhere - you will love it.Īs mentioned earlier, inflation can feel mysterious in regard to its origins because inflation is an emergent property, born of a complex adaptive system. Resonating feedback loops in complex adaptive systems are the means by which all manner of extreme events can happen, from market crashes, to world wars, to the rise of dangerous mass movements.įor more on this topic, an excellent book to read is Ubiquity: Why Catastrophes Happen, by Mark Buchanan. If financial contagion occurs, the fear leaps from country to country and goes international. The fear feeds on itself, causing asset reserves to shrink as larger quantities of assets are withdrawn, until the banks face a liquidity crisis, on their way to a solvency crisis.Īt this point, the government is forced to announce some kind of intervention. The banks say reassuring things, but their reassurance that “everything is fine” only frightens people more. With a complex system, everything tends to affect everything, making the linkage pathways hard or impossible to determine.Ī complex system that is also adaptive - making it a complex adaptive system - adds another layer of mystery to the mix.Ī complex adaptive system will actively respond to feedback, and behaves differently in different environments, and may even react to its own reactions and respond to its own responses.Ĭomplex adaptive systems can create positive feedback loops, where a trend becomes self-reinforcing, causing the trend to feed on itself and grow more powerful over timeįor example, think of what happens in the midst of a financial crisis: People get scared and withdraw assets from banks. You can reverse engineer the linkages of a complicated system. That is what it means for a system to be complex, rather than complicated.Ī complicated system may have lots of moving parts, but straightforward transmission mechanisms. We can understand the science of hurricanes, but we can’t predict their formation in real time, because there are too many variables interacting within the weather pattern as it happens. ![]() To understand inflation, it helps to understand complexity, because inflation is an emergent property generated by a complex adaptive system.Ī complex system is a thing with multiple components, where the components interact with each other in unpredictable ways.įor instance, a tropical storm that turns into a hurricane is an example of a complex system. This can be especially true with monetary inflation, where the public may not be aware the supply of money and credit is increasing. Rather, when inflation gets going, there isn’t any single cause to point to, and thus no simple way to control it or identify the source. When we say inflation can be mysterious, we don’t mean it’s a literal mystery. Thanks so much for the kind words! As a reminder to all readers, if you have a question, or a comment, or find yourself curious about something, feel free to write in via. I know I am missing something but have no idea what it is. Who actually sees that the money supply is rising relative to goods and services? Who decides to raise prices as a result? If Mr. The hidden reason is because a greater volume of currency is chasing a relatively smaller volume of goods and services, causing prices to naturally rise.” “If the general supply of money increases, and the money is being lent and spent (as opposed to just sitting in bank vaults), prices can seem to rise mysteriously with no one able to pinpoint why. “A currency can also be degraded by way of hidden inflation, which happens when an increased supply of currency enters the network.
